Alexandra Park Greenhouse Group Ion Castro looks at the link between a greenhouse and ‘The Memorial’ – Hastings’ late lamented Albert Memorial The Alexandra Park Greenhouse Group has just launched their new campaign to save the 1920's greenhouse where the Statue of Prince Albert, seen here wearing his gardening hat. Albert has resided here since Hastings’ Albert Memorial, erected in his memory in 1862 was demolished in 1972. The last remaining greenhouse has been derelict for decades, but having been built to a very high specification in the 1920’s the teak woodwork, cast iron bracketry and iron window opening mechanisms are still in remarkably good condition, just crying out for restoration and Albert seems none the worse for having spent over 40 years amongst the plants. |
