Hastings Museum & Art Gallery

Bohemia Road, Central Hastings

A museum containing displays of dinosaurs, local wildlife, Native Americans and Grey Owl, paintings, ceramics and features on John Logie Baird and Robert Tressell. The adjoining Durbar Hall was built as part of an Indian palace for the Indian and Colonial exhibition of 1886 and contains material from India, the Far East and Australasia collected by the Brassey family in the 1870s and 1880s.

Old Town Hall Museum

Mon-Fri 10am-4pm, Sat-Sun 11am-4pm
High Street, Old Town

Provides an introduction to the history of the Old Town of Hastings. The Museum reopened in 1999 following a major refurbishment project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The building is now fully accessible, and contains a wealth of historic exhibits, interactive models and reconstructions.

The Fishermen's Museum

Rock-a-Nore Road, Old Town

Formerly a church, now exhibiting many fishing artefacts of yesteryear, the centrepiece of which is "The Enterprise", one of the last Hastings' sailing luggers. Call: Hastings 461446

2.15pm Meet at Shipwreck & Coastal Heritage Centre, Rock-a-Nore
An interesting and unusual guided walking tour of hidden narrow footpaths, flights of steps and nooks & crannies, many with a tale to tell. The tour, lasting approx 1hr 20mins, involves some steps and steep inclines and will include amusing factual and historical anecdotes. Hastings Week Opening Ceremony

9.30am Town Hall
Kingfisher Band, a 1066 piper and pre-service units of the town parade from Woolworths to the Town Hall. A colourful scene of Standard Bearers, services and youth groups.
The Town Crier introduces the Mayor who formally opens the week of festivities. A small party then proceed to Hastings Castle to raise the Gonfalon, the flag of William the Conqueror.

Take a trip up in the lift or walk up via Cobourg Place and over the hill. The official Old Hastings Preservation Society walk, with experienced guides is downhill and takes approx 90 minutes, visiting many historical and picturesque sites of the town. Free but donations to Old Hastings Preservation Society are welcome.

Open Chess Tournament

7pm The Robert De Mortain, The Ridge
Trophies and cash prizes. The tournament will comprise 5 games. 15 minutes each per player per round. In the first round grade players will play un-graded players. HRVAB Memories Competition

Foyles War Street Party

Gateway Quiz

Hastings Runners carry flaming torches from Pelham Place to the East Hill beacon to start the procession.

Torchlight Procession by Hastings Borough Bonfire Society

7.15pm A spectacular traditional Sussex Bonfire procession with representatives of Bonfire Societies from across Sussex marking the anniversary of the discovery and foiling of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. Starts from The Stade, up All Saints Street and down the High Street to the promenade, turning right at Albert Road, into Queens Road turning at the junction of South Terrace back to the Town Hall to be joined by the Mayor, other officials and Town Criers. At the Town Hall the Town Crier reads the declaration of the America Ground, the procession continues across the America Ground to the promenade and finishes at Pelham Place car park. Pre event entertainment provided by Arrow FM.

One of the UK's largest, loudest and most extraordinary firework displays and one of the UK's largest Bonfires. Collections for local charities. The Hurricane: Twenty Years On

Local historian Steve Peak who was on the beach during the hurricane of Friday 16th October 1987, gives a guided tour of the Stade, looking at how Hastings was shaped by the sea and weather in the past, and how global warming could bring major changes.
