A CANTERBURY TALE
Electric Palace, 39a High Street, Hastings
£4 / 3cons
In keeping with the 1940's theme given to the Hastings Week celebrations the Electric Palace has selected to screen Powell and Pressburger's 1944 film A Canterbury Tale as part Hastings Week.

Probably Powell and Pressburger's most personal and unusual film, A Canterbury Tale bewildered audiences on its release, but has since come to be seen as one of their very best; Pressburger himself later declared it his favourite. The film offers a vision of an England with its spiritual roots in the countryside exemplified by the beauty of Kent. Their reworking of Chaucer's epic 14th century tale, largely set in wartime, centres on American army sergeant John Smith, British soldier Dennis Price and landgirl Shelia Sim who, before making a modern-day pilgrimage to Canterbury, solve the bizarre mystery of a man who pours glue over the hair of village girls at night. An unmissable classic screened as part of Hastings Week. 124mins
