Robert Tressell Centre Newsletter – April 2008
Dear Comrades
As we mentioned at the Robert Tressell Festival in 2007, we are not holding an event in Hastings this year, as Liverpool is holding its European City of Culture programme. There are quite a few events, both in Liverpool and elsewhere that we thought you might like to know about.
Throughout May there are many events commemorating Robert Tressell in Liverpool , organised by PCS, TUC North West, UCATT, Liverpool Trades Council and Unions 08. The unveiling of a plaque to Tressell on the evening of the 9 th May at Walton Park cemetery is particularly poignant, as our good friend John Nettleton, who was instrumental in marking the grave at Walton, sadly died earlier this year. On 10 th May there will be a talk by Steve Binns, Community historian, on Liverpool in the time of Tressell, at St George's Hall. Please phone 01424 447594 or 0151 231 6120 or email [email protected] for further details.
On 23rd May, from 6pm to 8pm Liverpool writer John Fay will be holding a special event at Liverpool John Moores University to discuss a project he is working on, inspired by The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. Please phone Dee for details on 01424 447594.
On 19th June, at 7.30pm, as part of Lewes TUC Festival of Socialism, there will be an event organised jointly with The Robert Tressell Society, including speakers John McDonnell, MP and Billy Hayes, General Secretary of the CWU. Please phone David Motley on 01273 476711 for further details.
We hope to see you at one of these events, or possibly at the Tolpuddle Festival over the weekend of the 18th -20th July.
We'll keep you posted with details of events in 2009.
