As an ex Hastings boy I found this site intriguing. I fondly remember going for tram rides (In the forties) getting on at the Crossroads Alexandra Park, and going the whole route to Cooden and comming back. Also great fun watching the poles come off the wires at the Silverhill depot. Bags of sparks, I had a piece of carbon conductor slider for years retrieved from there, defying my mothers insistance to "Throw that dirty thing away" It took pride of place among my collection of shrapnel on my dressing table. Happy days. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.

Excellent site. In my country (USA) there is no use for history as shown by local governments. When they do road work and uncover tram (we call them "streetcars") track, it is not preserved in place, or in most cases, even carted off to a museum. It is simply removed! There is not much here over 50 years old. It is oft considered here that your nation leads the way in historic transport concerns. Keep up the good work!

A very interesting collection of photos. As a rather belated addition, the contractor was William Rigby, who did a lot of railway work in SE England around that period. His tender was accepted by the South Eastern Railway board on 27 May 1897 - all the tenders received were above the original estimate.

I'm trying to get in touch with David Padgham (of St. Leonards?) to ask about the 'Centenary of the picture postcard' booklet he edited in 1994. Can you provide an email address or 'phone number, please?

Fond the web site extremely interesting as I must have walked under it thousands of times. I moved to Florida in 1987 and still miss my hometown badly. I'm trying to locate the address of Jim Barlow, an ex history teacher at the Grove. Any info greatly appreciated. Jim lived in Bexhill or Cooden I think. Also Mick Cooke who worked at the Observer in the case room. He was a prominant member of the Hstings Sub-Aqua Club. I 'd love to hear rom him.
