Message from the Mayor - 2007

Well, here we are with another wonderful week of events ahead of us. Every year, the number of things to do or see grows and with so many clubs and organisations wanting to take part, it is becoming difficult to fit everything in so we may have to consider making ‘Hastings Week' longer still!
The effort put in by so many people with all their different ideas, produces an amazing variety of things to do and see and is a magnificent show-case for our wonderful town. My thanks to everyone on the committee who all give so much of their personal time, especially our late Chairman, Gordon Hobson, who did his best to keep us all in order! We were very sad to hear of his sudden death in July; this year's events are a fitting tribute to him. Do join in as much as you can and participate in everything that has been organised for your enjoyment. My Deputy, Councillor Vivienne Bond and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible through the week.

This note from the Chair was written before he sadly passed away in July 2007...

Once again Hastings and 1066 Country celebrate the 941st Anniversary of the greatest defeat in our History, and once again a great team of volunteers, with the help of Hastings Borough Council have put together a great programme of events for everyone to enjoy.
This being the one hundredth anniversary of Scouting our theme this year is Scouting and Youth. I hope you will give them your encouragement and support at the events which include Jazz, Classic Car Show, Musical Concerts, a light opera evening, fireworks, hobbies and craft and much much more. I am sure you will find something of interest for you during the week which also includes several arts and craft shows, talks and special events at museums.
I have decided I shall stand down as Chairman of the 1066 Committee next March, but hopefully stay on the committee. Having given 20 years service to this Committee I feel new thoughts and new ideas would be in order. I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have given and watched Hastings Week grow from the humble Hastings Day on October 14th to some ninety events during the whole week.
My thanks to the staff and members of the Hastings Council for giving us their support and to you for your support in the past and hopefully in the future.
At the time of writing this we are enjoying wonderful weather. I only hope the weather gods will be good to us for Hastings Week!
